How To Back Up Tumblr For Free [2023]

You can export all of the content you’ve created for your blog, and package it up into a convenient ZIP file for you to download.

Marco Arment, the lead developer of Tumblr, the popular microblogging community, has released a Tumblr blog backup app for Mac called Tumblr Backup app.

It is a simple backup tool, but unlike the traditional approach, blog content after a backup can be viewed on any computer, burned to CD/DVD, or placed as an HTML file archive.

If you have a Tumblr blog, you can try it. The app is in public beta and there are a few limitations, like the result is saved in a simple theme, photosets are not fully loaded, etc. Hopefully, the developer plans to implement these features in the final version. Click the link below to see the full release notes.

To start the process, navigate to your account settings on the web:

  • Click “Settings” under the account icon at the top of the dashboard.
  • Select the blog you’d like to export on the right side of the page.
  • Scroll down to the “Export” section and click the “Export [blog name]” button.
  • You’ll see a message indicating that your backup is processing.

When your blog’s content is finished collecting, the processing message will be replaced with a “Download backup” button. Click this button to download a ZIP file of your blog’s exported contents. Underneath the “Download backup” button, you will also see another “Export [blog name]” button for generating a new blog export.

You will also receive an email from Tumblr, notifying you that the backup has been completed. If you’re exporting a group blog, please note that only Admins will be notified of its completion.
